Seborrheic dermatitis causes moist thickened skin with yellow scaly patches around the scalp, eyebrows, and face including the nasolabial folds. Whilst the exact cause is unknown it’s been associated with high levels of sebum production, and differs from atopic dermatitis with the absence of any familial history of allergies.

Seborrheic dermatitis is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors that become triggered by an atypical reaction to excess fungus called Malassezia yeasts that colonise the skins superficial layers particularly the scalp, face, and body folds.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms are characterised by inflammatory white/yellowish flaky patches in areas rich in oil producing sebaceous glands, flaking skin/dandruff; an irritable rash that appears darker on black skin, and lighter on white skin; or a distinct ring-shaped rash
PRESCRIPTIVE TREATMENTS
Mild SD
Breakouts can resolve spontaneously or be managed by maintaining moisture levels and replacing soaps with emulsifying ointments; or antifungal cream or medicated anti-fungal shampoo
Moderate SD
Topical antifungal agents (e.g., Ketoconazole 2% or Ciclopirox 1% cream) can reduce the amount of yeast however, these agents can increase dryness thus require moisturiser afterwards.
Severe: SD
Immuno-modulating topical calcineurin inhibitors (Tacrolimus ointment /Pipecuroniums cream) + topical corticosteroid (e.g., Hydrocortisone 1%) + emollients for flare-ups.
