Bacterial pathogens, genetics, hormones and inflammatory processes are implicated.
SYMPTOMS
Acne can present with non-inflammatory open (whiteheads) and/or closed comedones (blackheads), or as inflammatory acne vulgaris and nodulocystic acne; manifesting with papules with pustules or nodules and pseudocysts; commonly causes post-inflammatory erythematous pigmented macules and scars.
PRESCRIPTIVE TREATMENTS

Topical benzoyl peroxide; Azelaic acid + Tretinoin or Adapalene gel + antiseptic keratolytic washes and salicylic acid +/- the combined oral contraceptive
Moderate Acne
Tetracycline: Doxycycline or Erythromycin /Trimethoprim) + Anti-androgen therapy: Cyproterone Acetate/ Ethinylestradiol Or Isotretinoin
Severe:
Symptoms of fever, arthralgia, bone pain, ulcerated/extensive skin lesions require a dermatology referral plus oral antibiotics +/- Isotretinoin
