Eczema has a hereditary allergic component associated with hayfever, rhinitis & asthma; symptoms are triggered by irritants (e.g., detergents, soaps, metals). Treatments help strengthen the skin’s natural barrier which is compromised in eczema .
SYMPTOMS
Eczema is characterised by fluctuating phases of remission and relapsing, symptoms including red, itchy and crusted skin with blisters w/wo weeping clear fluid; that can lead to thickened /scaly and cracked skin, vulnerable to flareups.
PRESCRIPTIVE TREATMENTS
Mild Eczema
Identify and avoid environmental triggers to reduce flareups , and use emollients to soften and loosen scaley skin + low dose topical corticosteroid (e.g., hydrocortisone 1%) +/- non-sedating antihistamine
Moderate Eczema
Topical treatments with a moderate corticosteroid (e.g., Betamethasone valerate or Clobetasone Butyrate) ) alongside a moisturiser and emollients are advised, whilst an antihistamine can reduce itching.
Severe Eczema
If you experience severe symptoms you may need a higher dose corticosteroids however, weeping pustules with fever +/or malaise indicates infected eczema that require antibiotics and a dermatologist referral.
