Photosensitivity can lead to a chronic skin condition called Photodermatoses characterised by a rash in a sun-exposed distribution following sun exposure, the rash can become erythematous (red) and inflamed . Certain chemicals, materials and medications act as photosensitisers triggering a photosensitive reaction referred to as Photodermatitis – which is essentially an allergic reaction to a chemical or substance activated by the sun

Photodermatitis typically outbreaks occur within hours of exposure to sunlight, and may be harder to detect on brown or black skin but are commonly characterised by – eczematous plaques/blotches, hyperpigmented and/or vitiliginous (i.e. depigmented) areas, a burning sensation, and a red itchy rash with skin peeling.+/- swelling and blisters.
SYMPTOMS
Skin features include –
- Itchy bumps, blisters, or swelling.
- Pink/red spots that resemble eczema
- An erythematous (reddened) rash
- Hyperpigmentation (dark patches)
- Chills, headache, fever, and nausea.
PRESCRIPTIVE TREATMENTS
Mild
Avoid sunlight and ensure t wear adequate sunscreen with a high SPF when outdoors, maintain a balance in vitamins & minerals and keep well hydrated.
Moderate
The same advice as for mild symptoms however, also seek medical advice as you may require topical steroids to reduce the inflammation and aid healing.
Severe:
Seek medical advice as you may require steroids to help control acute symptoms, discuss a dermatology referral with your GP for any ongoing symptoms
